不懂就问！“吃土”的英文是“eat dirt”吗？

在瑞典、芬兰、西伯利亚等北欧以及非洲一些地区，还保留吃土的传统，据说还有一定的药用价值。

2015年“吃土”作为一个网络流行语进入人们的视野，指的是穷到没钱只能吃土，通常指疯狂购物后几乎连饭钱都没有。因此用“吃土”来比喻双十一后的大家，是不是特写实，特逼真？

那么，“吃土”用英语怎么说呢？

不可否认，“eat dirt”和“bite the dust”两个短语在英文中确实存在。

其中，“eat dirt”在《牛津英语词典》中的释义为：to submit to degrading treatment; also (U.S.) humiliating confession or retractation，即“卑微地接受侮辱，忍辱坦白或反悔”。

Considering he failed in a bid to become manager of Crawley Town shortly before arriving at Tynecastle, he can hardly be blamed for eating dirt at present.

鉴于在到达泰恩卡斯尔之前，他没能成功地成为克拉雷镇的镇长，那么现在这样卑微地接受侮辱也就无可指摘了。

除了字典中的释义，我们在真实语言使用中，还发现eat dirt真的具有“吃土”的意思，多用在would rather eat dirt than...（宁愿吃土也不）的句型中，如：

I have to say that with all your semicolons and intentionally formed sentences, I'd rather eat dirt than re-read your review, but I've read the book four times.

“bite the dust” 意思则是to fail or to be defeated or destroyed，即“失败、挫败、毁灭”，与中文“吃土”的含义不同。

虽然暗夜之王并不是《权力的游戏》中最受欢迎的那个被毁灭的角色，但是他绝对是个吸引人的中年男士。

即然“eat dirt”和“bite the dust”都不能表达“穷得吃土”，那么“吃土”的英文到底是什么呢？

“吃土”的语义内涵是手头拮据。在英语中，我们有很多类似的表达，例如“not get a bean”“feel the pinch”“be hard up”“be dirt poor”。下面我们来详细分析一下：

1. not have a bean

not have a bean是英式英语中的一个非正式表达，牛津词典的释义是“to have no money”，即“没钱”。

2. feel the pinch

feel the pinch的意思是“因寒冷、饥饿、贫穷等原因感受到压力与痛苦”，所以，这个词组强调的是一种痛苦的感受，而不是没钱的状态。

Lower-income households feel the pinch of higher food prices the most because they spend a greater proportion of their income on food than their wealthier peers.

低收入家庭由于食物价格攀升而感到极为痛苦，因为与高收入家庭相比，他们会花更大份额的家庭收入在食物上。（COCA）

3. be hard up

be hard up是一个口语表达，意思是缺钱（short of money）的状态，但是还没有到“吃土”的程度。例如：

It must be hard up for her, bringing up four children on her own.

她一个人抚养四个孩子一定很艰难。

4. be dirt poor

be dirt poor意思是be extremely poor，非常形象。与中文的“吃土”有异曲同工之妙。COCA中收录了来自《了不起的盖茨比》中描述盖茨比身世的一句：

You see, Doctor, Gatsby's real name was...James Gatz. His parents were dirt poor farmers from North Dakota.

瞧，医生，盖茨比的原名是杰姆斯.盖茨。他的父母是来自北达科他州的穷苦农民。
