【易混淆词】all / whole / entire 都是 "全部" ，但你知道怎样使用才正确吗？

你有想过为什么 the whole box 是对的，但 the whole software 是错的吗？

whole 和entire 是常见的单词，但你大概没深思过 whole 和 entire 如何使用，

所以今天 Engoo 要带你理解它们的用法！

首先，whole 可以当成形容词、副词、名词，意思都是整体、完整（的／地）；

而 entire 则是单纯的形容词，意思是 "整体、完整的" 。

两者意思近乎相同，绝大多数时候都可以替换使用，

whole 和 entire 差别在于 entire 比较强烈、正式一点。

今天，我们要讨论的就是 whole 和 entire 在都是形容词的情况下，

两者的使用规则为何，同时用一些例子让你更好了解。

形容词里面，有一类单词后面一定要接名词，

就是只能以形容词＋名词的形态出现，

这些形容词不可以自己单独存在，

用语法来说，就是不能作为补语功能。

这类形容词除了 whole 和 entire 外，

还有像是：outer、inner、former、main 等。

（错误）It's whole.

（正确）He ate the whole cake.

了解 whole 和 entire 后面一定要接名词后，

我们接下来要讨论他们后面可以接什么、不能接什么。

the whole / entire 的后面只能接单数名词，

同理，a whole / an entire 后面一样只能接单数可数名词。

但，有时候想表达 "全部＋复数名词" 的概念怎么办？

像是 "所有老师" 、 "所有城市" ……

这类复数名词，就要使用： "all the + 复数名词" 。

（错误）He watched the whole films in the morning.

（正确）He watched all the films in the morning.

他在早上把这些电影通通看完。

（错误）The revolutionaries were discussing how to destroy the entire cities at a certain moment.

（正确）The revolutionaries were discussing how to destroy all the cities at a certain moment.

革命者们正在讨论如何在特定的时刻摧毁所有城市。

不可数名词有很多，

像是：wealth、information、advice、rice 等等都是不可数名词。

the whole / entire 后面不可以接不可数名词。

如果想表达 "所有＋不可数名词" 的概念怎么办？

那就再让我们请出万能的 "all the + 不可数名词" ！

（错误）I will consider the entire advice you gave us.

（正确）I will consider all the advice you gave us.

我会考虑你给我的所有意见。

学习的时候，我最怕听到老师说凡规则必有例外，

因为那代表有额外的东西需要去记忆。

the whole / entire 和特定的不可数名词有着可以连用的例外，

像是 "the whole time" 、 "the whole truth" 、 "her whole career" 、 "his whole life" 等。

刚刚不是才说，whole / entire 后面只能接单数名词吗？

怎么那么快就产生自相矛盾的说法？

再仔细看一下，刚刚是说：

"the whole / entire 的后面只能接单数名词" ，

而这里是说，在没有冠词 (the / a / an) 的情况下，

whole / entire 可以接复数名词！

（错误）I don't believe he can read the whole dictionaries at a time.

（正确）I don't believe he can read whole dictionaries at a time.

我不相信他可以一次看完所有词典。
