　　1.belong的基本含义是“在原来该有的地方”,一般译为“属于”,“与…有关”。可以表示某物属于某人,某物属于某物的一部分; 某人属于某个组织或党派; 某人属于某时期或时代; 也可以表示某物〔人〕与另一物〔人〕有适合或匹配的关系。还可以表示某物〔人〕适于放〔用,住〕在某处等。

　　2.belong只能用作不及物动词,不可直接接宾语,常和介词to连用,指(主权方面的)“属于”,也指“是(社团、家族、社会阶层的)一员”。belong后也可跟其他介词或副词,表示“某人或某物在这地方或这场合正合适”。

　　3.belong常与表示程度或意志的副词连用。

　　4.在美式英语中, belong除接介词to, among , in, on, under或with,表示“应归 入… ”,强调关系和归属外,还有“住”的意思。

　5.belong后面还可以接不定式,表示“应该”,这属苏格兰用法。

　6.belong是表示所属关系的词,一般不用于进行体，也不用于被动结构。

7.现代俗语中还偶尔可用人作主语,接belong to表示“拥有”。

belong通常与什么介词连用

The house belongs to my grandfather. 这房子是我祖父的。

belong to可引申指“是……的成员”。如：

What party do you belong to? 你是属于哪个党派的?

Do you belong to the tennis club? 你是网球俱乐部的吗？

注意，这样用的 belong to 没有进行时态，也没有被动语态。如：

误：The house is belonging to my grandfather.

误：The house is belonged to my grandfather.

2. 表示适合在某处或放在某处，其后可根据情况选用不同的介词（如 in, on, under等）或接副词。如：

Where does this belong? 它应放在哪儿呢？

The book belongs on that shelf. 这本书应放在那个架子上。

This chair belongs in the living room. 这把椅子应放在起居室里。

有时与介词 with 连用表示“与……在一起”。如：

A child belongs with its mother. 小孩应与母亲生活在一起。

以上用法中的 belong 也不用于进行时或被动式。
