Japanese to English Translation Tips #6 「勝手」（かって）

・このマンションの玄関は、オートロックのため勝手に閉まります。= The entrance of this apartment building is fitted with an auto-lock so the door shuts by itself.

・長年この仕事をしていると、考えなくても手が勝手に動く。（とても仕事ができる様子）= When you’ve been doing this job for years, your hands just move without thinking. (describing someone who is really proficient at their job)

・家に帰ると勝手にラジオが流れ出した。= When I got home, the radio just suddenly turned on.

●     Case 2.　使い勝手が良い/悪い → easy to use, user friendly

・使い勝手の良いキッチン（キッチンの高さや収納などが使いやすく便利）

・この鍋は見た目も使い勝手も良い商品です。= This hotpot is user-friendly and looks great.

・このカメラはコンパクトで使い勝手が良い。= This camera is compact and easy to use.

●     Case 3.　〇〇勝手

(Ａ) 好き勝手（自分の思いのままふるまう）⇒ freely（肯定的な意味）

・一度しかない人生を好き勝手に生きてみたい。= We only live once, so I want to live life on my terms.

・子供に好き勝手をさせる。= Let the (my) kids do what they want.

・一人暮らしが長く好き勝手に暮らしている。= I’ve lived on my own for a long time and do what I want and when I want to do it.

(B) 自分勝手/身勝手（他人の事を考慮せずわがままに振る舞う）⇒ selfish　（否定的な意味）

・いつも自分勝手なことばかり言って他人を困らせる。= He/she always just says whatever he/she wants and puts others in a difficult position.

・人間の身勝手な行動が環境破壊につながる。= The selfish behavior of human beings will lead to destroying the environment.

・身勝手な言動は控えてください。= Stop behaving selfishly.

その他よく使う「勝手」の例 – Other typical examples in which 勝手 is used

・勝手気ままな一人旅：他人に気をつかわず、自分のしたいようにする旅 = A solo trip where you can do what you want

・勝手口：キッチンの出入り口や裏口 = Back door

・誠に勝手ながら：「大変申し訳ありませんが」のように丁寧にお願いするときなどの敬語表現 = I’m really sorry to trouble, I’m sorry to inconvenience you, but I would like… (A phrase frequently used in a business context)

・勝手が過ぎる：あまりにも自分に都合が良く振る舞っている様子（否定的）= To be selfish
