quite的用法（quite a.../a... quite）

The steak's quite good. 这牛排相当不错。

The job's quite impossible. 这工作完全没法干。

第一句中, quite是表示程度的副词 (如fairly, rather, pretty或very) 。它改变副词的强弱程度：我们知道这牛排比fairly good (还不错) 要好些，但还够不上rather good或very good (很不错) 。

第二句中, quite的含义：completely完全地，或absolutely绝对地。

quite的含义取决于跟它连用的是什么词。有些形容词、副词和名词是“可以显出程度的”。这些词所说的品质具有不同的强度或程度。例如，某人可以更加或不那么nice (好) , interesting (有趣) , old (老) , tired (疲倦) , polite (有礼貌) 或an idiot (一个白痴) 。另外一些词没有程度的差别。一般不能说，一个人比另一个人more perfect (更完美无缺) ，或一个工作是rather impossible (相当不可能) ，或一只猫看起来fairly dead (死得差不多了) 。某事物要么是完美无缺的、不可能的或死了，要么就不是，其中不会有程度的不同。

quite跟“表示程度的”词连用时，具有与fairly及rather同样的含义，跟“没有程度差别”的词连用时，则永远作completely或absolutely解。试比较：

I'm quite tired. (与fairly tired或rather tried类似。) 我相当累了。

I'm quite exhausted. (=completely exhausted.) 我精疲力尽了。

It's quite surprising. (=fairly／rather) 这很令人吃惊。

It's quite amazing. (=absolutely) 这简直令人惊异。

His French is quite good. (=not bad) 他的法语很不错。

His French is quite perfect. (=absolutely perfect) 他的法语好极了。

quite的“表示程度的”用法 (如quite good) 在美国英语中是少见的。

I'm not quite ready---won't be a minute. 我还没有完全准备好，马上就好。

My hair's not quite the same colour as yours. 我头发的颜色跟你的不完全一样。.

I don't think you're quite right, I'm afraid. 恐怕我不认为你就那么正确。

I don't quite agree. 我不完全同意。

quite similar与fairly／rather similar (相当像) 意思相同，但请注意：quite different意为“完全不同”。还请注意：我们说not quite the same (不完全一样)，不能说quite the same，而说exactly the same (完全一样) 。

后面跟名词时，它一般置于冠词前。

There's quite a good film on down the road. 马路那头，有一部相当好的影片在上映。

You're quite the most exciting man I've ever known. 你简直是我认识的最令人激动的人。

You're going quite the wrong way. 你路全走错了。

He made quite an effort, but it wasn't good enough. 他作了很大的努力，但还不够。

quite也可放在a／an后面，但只有当名词前有形容词时才可以这样用。

可以说：a quite good film，而不能说：a quite effort。

I quite like her. 我很喜欢她。

Have you quite finished? 快干完了吗?

Sorry, I quite forgot. 对不起，我全给忘了。

请注意：可以说I quite agree (我完全赞成) ，但不能说I quite disagree。

请注意：rather可用在比较级前 (如rather warmer) , quite则不能，只有在quite better这一表达方式中才能用。

quite better = completely recovered from an illness。病已完全好了
