　　Changes in People's Daily Expenses.

　　What is shown in the table above indicates that dramatic changes have taken place in the people's daily expenses from 1995 to 1999. The expenses on food have declined by 30% while those on clothing and recreation have increased respectively by 9% and 7% . The statistics of rise and fall seem to exist in isolation but closely related to one another .

　　There are two factors accounting for these changes. Development in economy is an essential one in the five years. The increased income resulting from economic growth plays an important part in the less expense on food. Hence, a small percentage of total income is enough to cover food expense. Another one is the changes in life style. When food presents no worry to the average, people begin to focus more of interest on handsome appearance and happy leisure time . As a result of such a shift, spending on clothing and recreation increases year after year.

　　From the analyses made above, we may come to the conclusion that people's living standards have been constantly improved between 1995 and 1999. With the further growth in economy and more changes in life style, the tendency indicated in the table will continue in the better direction .

　　Western festivals gain ever-increasing popularity inChina.A growing number of people inChinaare immersed in the thrilling atmosphere of the upcoming Christmas. Incomparison with the Spring Festival, the equally high status is given toChristmas by some of them.

　　There are a variety of factors contributing to this craze. First,younger age groups are exposed to western culture and lifestyles throughlearning English. And festivals are regarded as the highlight of westernculture. For example, Valentine's Day provides a vehicle for young adults toshow their love. Second, the advancement of economy enables Chinese people topossess increased purchasing power. They are heavily targeted by businessmen,who view foreign festivals as golden opportunities to make money. So theydesperately try to boost the atmosphere of foreign festivals.

　　Thenecessity of celebrating these foreign festivals is widely questioned. Peopleinvolved are to blame for their loose traditional values. Our home-grownfestivals play crucial roles in Chinese traditional culture. However, theirforeign counterparts are exerting strong influence on people's values andthoughts. There is no doubt that we should give our priority to Chinesetraditional festivals.

　　Different people have different views onfirecrackers．Some people thinkthat firecrackers should be banned because they endanger people's lives andsocial security,while others hold that firecrackers arenecessary for creating gaily atmosphere of festivity．

　　I am in favor of the first idea．The reasons are as follows．For onething, as the chemicals used to make these fireworks may cause explosions,fireworks are especially dangerous with injuries on the eyes, hands, ears, facesand heads of young kids, for another, setting off fireworks would deterioratethe city's air pollution, seriously threatening people's health and the security ofthe world.

　　However,it is our traditional custom to celebrate animportant occasion with firecrackers．How can we make a balance between maintaining this customand keeping the safety to human lives and the society? One possible solution isto develop a safe substitute of the firecracker with which the functions ofcelebration maintained by applying advanced technology．

　　Population officials and demographers have much to worry about China's increasingly aging population. It is estimated that the proportion of people aged 60 or older in China will rise to 11.8 percent in 2020. By the middle of this century, people aged beyond 60 will take up 27.4 percent of the total population — that means one out of every four people will be senior!

　　The aging population poses a serious challenge to families and the society. On the one hand, with families becoming smaller and living pace escalating, it is even graver for families to care for aged members adequately. On the other hand, aging causes a relative decline in working force. Consequently, the productivity of the whole society will be affected to some extent.

　　The rapidity of the population's aging has made it more urgent for the adoption of countermeasures. There is no doubt that the key is to build a solid economic foundation. Meanwhile, importance should be attached to overall social progress by changing the backward situation in social security, welfare and service. What's more, family care and community-based services should also be encouraged.

　　Idol worshipping is not a new phenomenon,but the recent cases of unreasonable behaviors conducted by some young people have made it a focus of attention again.Especially,a young girl's father has committed suicide just to wake up his daughter who is possessed by the idea of following her idol wherever he goes.

　　Some people argue that the mass media is to blame for the tragedy because it always shows a picture of glamorous movie stars.pop singers and all the other entertainers that young people desire to have.However,young people are just not mature enough to tell fact from fiction.Other people believe that it shows the weakness of our educational system.School pays much attention to students' studies and exams,but overlooks their psychological status.

　　As far as I am concerned.the tragedy sends out an alarm signal to US all. The media,the school,the parents and even the youth themselves have to reflect on the issue and try to stop such kind of tragedy from happening again.
